The hand-woven Köprübaşı Kilim was woven by nomadic women in a village in the Balikesir region from hand-spun wool on cotton and is in great condition. Probably intended as a dowry for a wedding, the weaver dyed the wool yarn herself with exceptionally beautiful and strong colors. She also added something very special to the kilim: a small blue bead (Mavi Boncuk), which is meant to protect against evil and bring good luck, was woven into the kilim. For years, the kilim was only laid out for special occasions and was therefore not exposed to light, which allowed it to retain its full luminosity and remain in excellent condition.

The following motifs are visible:

✿ Bukagi (Shackle / Fetter)

The shackle is a type of cuff. The cuffs are connected to each other by a chain. The shackle symbolizes the continuity of the family unit, the devotion of the married couple, and the hope that they will always stay together.

✿ Nazar (Nazar Amulet / Eye)

It protects against evil glances and thoughts.

In nomadic tents, in addition to the Nazarlik motif, various objects were used to reduce the effect of the evil eye and thus protect those who wear them, e.g., blue beads, shells, old coins, etc.

By the way: Maşallah means Wonderful! Literally: May God protect you/it. An exclamation when one sees something beautiful and is also used as an expression of joy.
