The Soul of Weaving

It all began in a small shop in Kaş, bathed in the very special light of the low-hanging September sun. A Barak Kelim was hanging outside, its patterns and colors captivating me. I snagged the piece practically in the very last minute of the season. The owner was clearly in "closing up shop" mode, likely just waiting for that final customer before locking the door. No sooner had I tucked the Kelim under my arm than the deal became the official signal for closing time: The very next day, the shop was shut, and the man had vanished for his winter vacation.

One could say that with my purchase, I personally sent him off to his well-deserved winter break – a fitting end for him and a stroke of luck for me. This Kelim accompanied me on my journey back to Berlin. And with it came more than just an object: a new connection to my own history.

Roots that remain tangible

As the child of Turkish parents, the art of weaving is part of my heritage. Today, it is part of my work – and my understanding of beauty.

For me, a hand-woven Kelim is not merely a decorative object. It is materialized memory: in the structure of the wool, in the colors of nature, in the symbols passed down through generations.

Every piece I select carries precisely this depth within it.

The Kelim Atelier Berlin was born from this connection.

I travel regularly to Turkey to find unique textile pieces. For me, it's not about quantity, but about selection. About pieces that speak their own language: "Vintage Souls" – not as a concept, but as a description of what they already are.

Every Kelim is carefully cleaned and, if necessary, gently and meticulously restored without altering its history.

The cushions are created in close collaboration with long-standing partners in Turkey. Fair conditions and respectful cooperation are a given – not as a promise, but as a foundation.
